TPMS Warning Light: What It Means and What to Do
That tire-shaped warning light on your dashboard is your Tire Pressure Monitoring System or TPMS. When it illuminates, your tires are telling you something important.
What Is TPMS?
Since 2007, all passenger vehicles must have TPMS by federal law. The system monitors tire pressure and alerts you when pressure drops below 25% of the recommended level.
Why Did the Light Come On?
Common causes include:
- Temperature changes: Cold mornings can drop pressure significantly
- Slow leak: Nail or puncture gradually losing air
- Valve stem failure: Rubber deteriorates over time
- Sensor battery dead: TPMS sensors last 5-7 years
What Should You Do?
Immediate action: Check all four tires with a pressure gauge. Add air to the recommended PSI found on your driver door jamb.
If the light stays on: You likely have a slow leak or TPMS sensor issue. Visit Payless Tire for diagnosis.
Pocket-Saving Tip
Ignoring TPMS warnings reduces fuel economy and can cause premature tire wear. Small pressure issues become expensive problems.
