Warning signs your tires may need replacement

A flat tire does not always mean you need a new one. Some tires can be repaired safely. Others should be replaced right away. The location of the damage matters just as much as the size of the hole.

When a tire is often repairable

A simple puncture in the center tread area is often repairable if the tire has enough tread left and has not been driven flat for too long. Nails and screws in the tread are the most common repair cases.

When replacement is the safer move

  • Damage in the sidewall or shoulder
  • A large cut or split
  • Very low tread
  • Visible cords or severe uneven wear
  • Damage from driving too long on low pressure

Why location matters

The center tread area handles repairs better. The sidewall flexes too much, which is why sidewall punctures usually are not safe to patch. A tire may still hold air for a while and still be the wrong tire to repair.

Do not guess from the outside

Some damage looks minor from the outside but is worse once the tire is removed and inspected. That is why a quick look in the driveway is not enough to make the call.
